Ruslan Chagaev Defeats Fres Oquendo To Claim WBA Heavyweight Boxing Title In Grozny, Russia

Chagaev Oquendo

Heavyweight boxing is far from dead if you saw Ruslan Chagaev defeat Fres Oquendo for the WBA heavyweight boxing title on July 06, 2014 in Grozny, Russia at the Ahmat Arena before a crowd of 30,000 plus.  Chagaev didn’t win by spectacular knockout or landslide decision but he did in fact win the bout via majority decision.

The Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov, was in attendance at the arena and he even motivated Chagaev during the rounds.  Kadyrov was in the ring by Ruslan’s side when the decision was being announced.

Fres Oquendo put up a decent fight and made the boxing event special so he has nothing to be ashamed of.  Considering that Oquendo is in his early 40’s, there is no shame in losing a close decision to a man who is several years younger.

Ruslan Chagaev’s record improves to (33-2-1, 20 KO’s) and Fres Oquendo falls to (37-8, 24 KO’s).

Will Chagaev be able to land another shot at Wladimir Klitchko with his win over Oquendo? Is he deserving of a shot at Klitchko?  It doesn’t really matter; Ruslan Chagaev declared this victory to be his most special and the accolades that he received from his countrymen made July 06, 2014 the best day of his life.
