Fres Oquendo vs Ruslan Chagaev Boxing Event Nearly Cancelled AGAIN
Boxing champions, Fres Oquendo and Ruslan Chagaev already had to postpone their WBA heavyweight boxing title fight on June 07, 2014 to July 06, 2014 due to Oquendo’s issues with his former promoter. On July 04th, just two days shy of their battle in Grozny, Russia, Oquendo was ready to ask for another postponement due to personal issues.
Promoter, Timur Dugazaev has already spent so much money on the fight and sold out the 30,000 seat Ahmat Arena in Grozny so he was willing to replace Fres with either American heavyweight boxing champion Shannon Briggs or Alexander Ustinov. Even heavyweight Alexander Petkovic was considered as a replacement since Dugazaev can’t afford to cancel the boxing event. With so much hype in Grozny for the fight and sales of the hot tickets at an all time high, a last minute replacement for Fres would have been better than cancelling the heavyweight boxing event altogether.
Thankfully, Oquendo and his team were able to board a plane from their hometown of Chicago, Illinois (in the United States) to fly to Warsaw Poland and then board a private plane to Grozny. As with all combat sports, the show must go on but a show with the original main event has no better substitution.
Both boxing champions will weigh in on Saturday, July 05th and battle on Sunday, July 06th. Who says heavyweight boxing is dead?
