Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions to Co-Promote Title Boxing Card (Sort Of)

Vasyl Lomachenko Gary Russel Jr

Top Rank promoted, Vasyl Lomachenko (1-1, 1 KO) will take on Golden Boy promoted, Gary Russell, Jr. (23-0, 13 KO’s) this Saturday night, June 21st, at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California. The bout will be shown on Showtime at 10PM (EST) for the vacant WBO Featherweight title in what is sure to be an epic boxing event!

Although Ukrainian Lomachenko has had only two professional fights, he is a two time gold medalist for the Ukrainian Olympic boxing team and he has had almost 400 amateur boxing fights under his belt. The man had an amateur record of 396-1, which is beyond impressive. The only knock against him would be his last professional bout against Orlando Salido, where Salida fought a dirty fight and beat Lomachenko via split decision this past March. In Lomachenko’s defense, Salida couldn’t make the weight for his bought against the Ukrainian so the WBO featherweight title became vacant since Salido got the victory.

If Gary Russell, Jr. is a smart fighter, which I know he is, he will study the Salido-Lomachenko fight to learn just how to defeat the Ukrainian. The American sports an undefeated professional career and the great Sugar Ray Leonard has even compared Russell to himself in his early days. Sugar Ray doesn’t say that about many people at all. The American was also voted Prospect of the Year in 2011 by ESPN boxing, SI.com, and RingTv.com.

For those of you betting boxing, the smart money is on Gary Russell, Jr. to defeat and possibly even expose Lomachenko in a one-sided fight. Please note that we do not give out betting advice, nor are we condoning gambling. We just believe that Gary Russell, Jr. is the more well-rounded fighter and he will most likely be too much for the Ukrainian to handle on Saturday night.

As a side note, the reason this fight is being shown on Showtime and not HBO is that Golden Boy won the purse bid for this fight.

So how much will Lomachenko earn for this fight? Lomachenko will earn $631,350 and Russell will make $420,900. The WBO’s rules state that since Lomachenko is facing Russell in Russell’s home country, the Ukrainian will earn the larger share of the purse.

The main event will be Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero vs Yoshihiro Kamegai. And the fight before Lomachenko vs Russell, Jr will be Devon Alexander vs Jesus Soto Karass. All in all, Showtime boxing will be delivering an outstanding line up of fights this Saturday. Those at the Stub Hub Center will experience some fine ringside boxing and those at home will most likely enjoy it just as much.
