In a match that started with Vasyl Lomachenko as a 9:1 favorite in some sports betting sites, the Ukrainian slugger didn’t disappoint his fans in attendance and around the world via HBO boxing telecast. Lomachenko (7-1, 4KO’s) battered the previously undefeated Nicholas Walters (26-1-1, 21 KO’s) for 6 rounds until Nicholas had had enough and quit right before the start of round 7. It was disappointing to say the least since the beating that Walters took didn’t warrant quitting. The crowd agreed with this assessment and loudly booed when Walters was being interviewed by HBO’s Max Kellerman.

But to Walters’ credit, he was very classy in defeat and openly admitted that his 343 days of inactivity affected his performance in the ring tremendously. The man who easily dismantled Nonito Donaire and knocked him out in October 2014 was either long gone or still no match for Vasyl.

The first round started out with both men feeling each other out. Lomachenko might have won the first round by a small margin but from round 2 onward, Lomachenko used a lot of intelligent movement to set up his right jabs and furious combinations. Another thing that Vasyl did was make his opponent miss a lot of shots and then counter him as he reset to his stance. By the time the 5th round started, it was evident that Lomachenko was going for a knockdown and or knockout. The most surprising thing was Walters giving away that special “0” so easily by not putting up a fight after round 6 and suddenly quitting.

Regardless of our opinion, Nicholas Walters was a real deal fighter who would have tested anyone in the ring and the fact that Lomachenko blew right through him is astounding. Vasyl is undoubtedly one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world right now.

After the fight, Max Kellerman had asked Lomachenko who he would like to fight next and the Ukrainian stated that the next man that he would like to face would be Francisco Vargas. Although that fight would most likely be more entertaining that this fight, it would be another easy win for Vasyl.

Perhaps Bob Arum can set up a rematch between Orlando Salido and Vasyl Lomachenko so that the latter can avenge his only defeat? Wouldn’t that make for a more marketable fight?

TRENDING FIGHTERS: Terrence Crawford, Nicholas Walters, Orlando Salido, Nonito Donaire

When pressed to explain himself, Cotto stated: “I am not disappointed by the WBC’s decision, It was all about money. The fee for this fight was absurd to me and I prefer to keep the money in my account. I don’t need to pay attention to Oscar De La Hoya’s opinion. He should take care of his own business. And I will take care of mine. I don’t stick my nose in Oscar’s business. The organizations wants four champions in every division just to earn a percentage from everybody. Then we have to pay for their mistakes. This is not fair to me. The WBC told me my offer was not reasonable to them. They told me I was not going to be the champion anymore. I don’t need their belt. I have enough belts in my house and with the money I saved, I can buy any belt I want. I can be the champion of whatever I want in my house.”

Showtime boxing put on a great card which featured American heavyweight, Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (33-0, 32 KO’s) defeat WBC world heavyweight champion Bermane “B-Ware” Stiverne (24-2-1, 21 KO’s) via 12 round unanimous scores of 118-109, 119-108, and 120-107. Stiverne was the only man to go past round four against the 6’8” Wilder and the only man that Wilder has not been able to knock out.

The boxing event was action packed throughout the night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The crowd of nearly 10,000 fans saw a great heavyweight showdown between Wilder and Stiverne. Although Wilder landed a tremendous number of shots on Stiverne, the crowd was anxious to see Wilder knock out the Haitian heavyweight but that knock out never came, thanks to Stiverne’s iron chin.

Boxing belts don’t mean much since everyone has a belt but tonight’s fight was different since the WBC heavyweight title was on the line. That’s a major title in boxing and tonight was especially historic since Deontay Wilder becomes the first American heavyweight champion since 2007 (when Shannon Briggs won the belt).

Deontay’s jab was the difference maker in the fight since he was able to break through Stiverne’s guard and land at will. Wilder set up his right hands perfectly; followed by his pinpoint jabs. Stiverne did well in round 4 and in round eight when he caught Wilder with some good shots but I think those rounds were more like Wilder resting than Stiverne coming up with serious offense. Wilder banged up Stiverne pretty badly in rounds five, seven, and nine.

Deontay Wilder dedicated this fight to his daughter and kept his promise of bringing home the heavyweight title. Surprisingly, Stiverne was classless in defeat as he simply stated that he was not “at a 100%” as opposed to Wilder being the better man. Stiverne went on to state that if his body gave his all and Wilder still beat him, he would have given Deontay his due credit.

Simply classless!

Tyson Fury is set to take on Deontay Wilder in what would be a huge title boxing event. The 6’9” Fury would be the biggest fighter that Wilder will have faced in his career.

Will size make a difference when Wilder and Fury meet? Who will be considered the favorite?

The boxing event the world has waited six or seven years to see is finally (most likely) going to happen. According to Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Manny Pacquiao’s promoter, the Pac Man has signed on the dotted line to face Mayweather on May 02nd in what will surely be the richest fight in the history of combat sports.

Although Arum declined to comment on the venue, pay, and other specifics of the fight, a source close to Showtime boxing or HBO boxing stated that the purse split was going to be 60/40 in Floyd’s favor. The expectation is that the fight could cost $100 on pay per view and be expected to do in excess of 3 million buys. Both pro boxers would be in for a payday unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Ringside boxing seats will cost over $5,000 simply for the fact that the fight is so coveted and this will truly be a historic event. In order to generate a $40 million gate at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, all ticket prices will be sky high.

Those betting boxing will want to place their wagers soon since rumor has it that Mayweather might open as a 3:1 favorite but those odds are sure to become more acceptable as time goes by. Sports betting is always popular but this fight will probably bring it to never before seen heights!

Although Mayweather’s people have also agreed to the terms of the fight, it is Floyd Mayweather, Jr himself who has yet to sign to fight Manny Pacquiao. The world is watching, Floyd!!

Promoter Bob Arum told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday that Manny Pacquiao has agreed to terms for a May 2 bout with Floyd Mayweather, and that the only thing in the way of the long-awaited fight occurring is Mayweather’s approval.

Arum said Mayweather’s representatives have also agreed to the deal but have not been able to get Mayweather’s agreement. However, there is no verification from anyone representing Mayweather whether Arum’s side is accurate.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported that progress was being made on making the match a reality. Multiple sources told Yahoo Sports over the weekend that a deal for the two superstars to fight at the MGM Grand Garden was imminent.

The sources told Yahoo Sports that not only have the sides agreed for the fight to be May 2 at the MGM, but also on a 60/40 purse split that would favor Mayweather. Mayweather could make in the range of $120 million. An MGM spokesman told Yahoo Sports that there was no deal for the fight to be held at the Grand Garden as far as he is aware.

In order to pay the astronomical salaries the fighters will command, ticket prices will be scaled at an all-time high. The top ticket at the MGM Grand Garden is expected to go for $5,000 so that the arena can be scaled to produce a $40 million live gate.

A $40 million live gate would be virtually double the existing record gate of $20,003,150, which was set at the MGM in 2013 by Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.

Arum refused Tuesday to speak about details, but said Pacquiao was on board with all terms.

“I want to get some movement here, with bringing Mayweather to the table so we can go out and get everything signed and get the networks together and get the thing finished,” Arum told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday.

Mayweather has an exclusive contract with Showtime and Pacquiao is obligated to HBO. It is not immediately clear which network will broadcast the fight, though it is expected that both will be involved. That was the solution worked out in 2002, when Mike Tyson (Showtime) fought Lennox Lewis (HBO) in Memphis, Tenn.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao bout first began to be seriously discussed in 2009. Mayweather ended a brief retirement by routing Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM on Sept. 19, 2009. Two months later, in perhaps the defining performance of his career, Pacquiao stopped Miguel Cotto at the MGM in the 12th round on Nov. 14, 2009.

It was clear at that point that they were not only the best welterweights in the world, but also the two best pound-for-pound fighters, period. While Mayweather is now widely acknowledged as the No. 1 fighter in the world, there was some debate in 2009 after Pacquiao stopped Cotto. Pacquiao was on a streak of 11 wins in a row that included dominant one-sided victories over Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales.

An agreement was close in 2009 for a March 2010 bout, but it fell apart when Pacquiao declined Mayweather’s last-minute demand for drug testing.

Former HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg tried to mediate a deal between the sides in 2011, and talks seemed promising at one point before it lost momentum. And in 2012, Mayweather personally called Pacquiao and offered him a flat $40 million for the fight. Pacquiao declined because there was a lot more money in the fight and he wouldn’t have gotten any pay-per-view revenue.

Arum declined to speak on the record over the weekend when reached by Yahoo Sports to discuss the rumors circulating that the fight was on the verge of being made. But early Tuesday, he spoke to Brad Cooney of Examiner.com and told Cooney that Pacquiao had agreed to terms.

In a conversation later Tuesday with Yahoo Sports, Arum was asked if he were trying to force Mayweather’s hand by speaking publicly after he was so tight-lipped and adamantly refusing to comment over the weekend.

“I’m not trying to force anybody’s hand, I’m just saying, ‘Hey, we’ve agreed to everything, period,’ ” Arum told Yahoo Sports. “The people we have talked to on Mayweather’s side have agreed to everything. Now we need Mayweather to step up and say, ‘Yeah, I’m on board. I agree.’

“I’m not going to put a deadline on there. I’m just going to hope that everybody does the right thing and we get this concluded. It would be really sad if we went through this stuff again like we did before.”

Arum said he and Pacquiao were “ignorant about the drug-testing stuff,” when Mayweather first made the request for testing in the 2009 negotiations. He said Pacquiao has educated himself on it and has no problem to being tested and readily agreed to testing as part of his deal in getting the Mayweather fight.

He declined to talk specifics on Tuesday about purses, venue and the like, but said his only goal was to get a deal consummated. Pacquiao is flying to the U.S. on Wednesday and has meetings with Arum and then is doing publicity for a movie.

Arum said he hopes to avoid getting close to a deal, getting hopes up and then having it dashed.

If that’s his position, it doesn’t make sense to talk publicly about private negotiations, but that’s always been Arum’s style.

“The point is that I don’t want what happened the other times to happen again,” Arum said. “I want this fight to actually happen. I want everybody to make a lot of money on the fight. I want the public to be satisfied. And I think it will be a terrific event. That’s what I want, and I’ve done everything in my power to make that happen.

“I think Manny has been very reasonable and demonstrated that he wants the fight to happen. Now, we’re waiting on Floyd. That’s not to say that Floyd has been obstinate, that Floyd won’t do it, but we’re waiting on him.”

Top Rank is also working on a middleweight title fight between Alvarez, the Golden Boy star from Mexico, and WBC champion Miguel Cotto. Promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy is on record saying he wants Alvarez to fight on May 2, and Arum has agreed that it made sense to have Alvarez fighting on a Mexican holiday.

But Arum said that if fighting on May 2 meant that much to Mayweather, he would look to make the Cotto-Alvarez fight for some other date. That fight still isn’t finalized, though, and it’s no guarantee that it will be.

The man of many talents and even more wealth, Jay Z (real name Shawn Carter), has become a boxing promoter and the first acquisition for his Roc Nation stable is super middleweight great (cough, cough), Andre Ward. There was a nice picture posted on social media by Ward.

Breaking news: Oscar De La Hoya, aka The Golden Boy, dropped his $50 million lawsuit against former Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, on Friday, January 09th. The financial terms of the deal are being closely guarded as none of the parties wanted to speak to media but some notable fighters such as Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner, Daniel Jacobs, and Marcos Maidana.

There are some Al Haymon fighters who have contracts under Golden Boy Promotions such as Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, and Leo Santa Cruz that will continue to fight for Golden Boy Promotions but for a limited number of fights. There wasn’t much information released on their terms just yet.

Canelo Alvarez and Bernard Hopkins are still loyal to Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions, and HBO boxing. Although Al Haymon is not technically a boxing promoter and just a “handler” of pro boxers, he is the brains and power behind the fairly newly formed Mayweather Promotions, along with Floyd Mayweather, Jr and manager Leonard Ellerbe.

Another caveat of this settlement is that Richard Schaefer will stay away from the boxing world for a period of time, which was not released, but some boxing sites are reporting to be about 2 years. On a side note, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions signed a dozen new fighters to their stable.

After considering the history of Al Haymon and Oscar De La Hoya, it’s safe to expect HBO boxing to continue to dominate Showtime Boxing for a long period of time as the former has exclusive rights with Golden Boy Promotions as well as Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions (which has Manny Pacquiao under contract). Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya want to give boxing fans the fights they want to see and Al Haymon clearly does not.

Showtime boxing is doomed under the cancer known as Al Haymon, Floyd Mayweather, and the Money Team…..mark my words, folks!!

What are your thoughts of this settlement? Did one side win over the other?

Per Fightnews.com: This past Saturday’s boxing event drew massive ratings for HBO. The co main event saw Nicholas Walters defeat Nonito Donaire via sixth round knockout and the main event saw Gennady Golovkin destroy Marco Antonio Rubio inside of two rounds. The Stub Hub Center in Carson, California was completely sold out and fans from all over tuned in to watch the two fights that aired, despite there being a highly rated college football game on ABC that night.

Golovkin vs Rubio delivered 1,304,000 viewers on Saturday night and it peaked at 1,323,000 at some point. Nonito Donaire vs Nicholas Walters delivered 1.1 million viewers and it peaked at 1,166,000 viewers.

Of the top 15 pro boxing cards on cable in 2014, 13 of them have been on HBO. The Golovkin vs Rubio main event was the second most watched boxing event on HBO in 2014, only behind Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr vs Bryan Vera II in March, which delivered 1,390,000 viewers.

Top Rank Promotions, HBO Boxing, and the entire Donaire and Golovkin camps must be thrilled about those numbers. Golovkin’s got bright blue skies ahead of him as he generates monster numbers regardless of who he’s fighting. And despite some people’s cries for Donaire to retire, he also has a potentially bright future ahead of him if he decides to switch trainers and start over again.

Hmm, I wonder what Al Haymon and his Showtime boxing crew must be thinking now? How soon before they decide to give the fans the fights they want to see?

For those betting boxing, Jermain Taylor shocked the boxing world by defeating Sam Soliman via unanimous decision for the IBF middleweight title in Biloxi, Mississippi. Despite being a 3:1 underdog against Soliman just several days ago, Taylor looked better than most expected him to against his super tough Australian opponent.

Sam Soliman (44-12, 18 KO’s) apparently injured his left leg in round 7 when he was barely grazed in round seven by “Bad Intentions” Taylor and knocked down. Jermaine would go on to score grazing knockdowns in rounds eight, nine, and eleven as he started coming on strong later in the fight.

Although Soliman was winning the earlier rounds, the moment he injured his left leg was the moment that Taylor took command of the fight. Truth be told, it was an ugly fight with lots of holding and clinching by Soliman who was off balance all throughout the boxing event. And Jermain Taylor (33-4-1, 20 KO’s) did just enough to earn the win. Had Soliman not injured his leg, we have no doubt that he would have easily outpointed Taylor in a 12 round snoozer.

“Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillan was in attendance for the fight and expressed an interest in a future showdown with a “top name” opponent without officially naming anyone. The middleweight division looked pretty stacked with Quillin, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin, Marco Antonio Rubio, and now Jermain Taylor all in the miz.

Who should Al Haymon have Taylor face next? Is Taylor ready to be a big part of Showtime boxing being that he’s managed by Haymon? Or will he remain on ESPN boxing since his skills are nowhere near what they once were? Please share your comments below?

Although Goossen was in the boxing business for many years, most people look to Bob Arum of Top Rank and Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy as the top promoters. Although that would be an accurate notion, Dan Goossen was just a small step behind them. Dan was the promoter of Super Six king, Andre Ward.
